70. CBT for schizophrenia.

CBT for schizophrenia. September 2009 1 Evidence Briefing for Leeds Partnerships NHS Foundation Trust Cognitive behaviour therapy for schizophrenia The NICE clinical guideline on schizophrenia 1 recommends that cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) should be offered to all people with schizophrenia. This recommendation is based primarily on evidence that CBT can reduce hospitalisation compared with standard care. A meta-analysis of randomised trials reported a 24% relative reduction (...) in hospitalisation at follow-up (up to 18 months after treatment). Duration of hospitalisation was reduced by an average of 8 days. Overall, the quality of the evidence supporting the recommendation is high to moderate. Differences in participant characteristics and details of the CBT intervention suggest some uncertainty about the generalisability of the findings across different settings. However, a number of the relevant trials were performed in UK NHS settings. Evidence for the cost-effectiveness of CBT
